What each style changes
Every style capitalizes the first and last word, keeps “a”, “an” and “the” lowercase, and capitalizes “is” because it is a verb. They split on the short words:
- AP and APA lowercase prepositions and conjunctions of 3 letters or fewer: How to Write a Blog Post About Anything.
- Chicago and MLA lowercase every preposition, however long: How to Write a Blog Post about Anything.
- Sentence case capitalizes only the first word, the first word after a colon, and names: How to write a blog post about anything.
Acronyms and brand spellings stay as you typed them, so SEO, B2B and iPhone come through unchanged.
What a converter can't know
Whether a short word is a preposition. “Up” in Set Up Your Blog is part of the verb, and every guide capitalizes it there. The converter capitalizes “up”, “out” and “over” for that reason, so check them when they start a phrase like up the hill.
Which words are names in sentence case. It can't tell Google from google, so a name typed in lowercase stays lowercase. Read the sentence case line once before you copy it.
Which style should your blog use?
Either one is correct, and neither ranks better. What readers notice is a blog where some headlines use one style and some use the other. We use sentence case because it has one rule and reads like a normal sentence.
Our post on headline capitalization rules covers where the four guides disagree and which style each kind of site tends to pick. For what goes into the headline itself, read how to write blog titles. To see where Google cuts your headline, paste it into our SERP Simulator.
Questions about the tool
What is title case?
Title case capitalizes the main words of a headline: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and pronouns. Short words such as "a", "the", "and" and "of" stay lowercase unless they are the first or last word.
What is the difference between title case and sentence case?
Title case capitalizes every main word: "How to Write a Blog Post". Sentence case capitalizes only the first word and names: "How to write a blog post". Both are correct. Pick one and use it on every headline.
Is "is" capitalized in a title?
Yes. "Is" is a verb, so AP, APA, Chicago and MLA all capitalize it: "What Is a Content Hub". The converter does the same.
Which words are not capitalized in a title?
Articles (a, an, the) in every style. AP and APA also lowercase prepositions and conjunctions of 3 letters or fewer, such as "of", "to" and "and". Chicago and MLA lowercase every preposition, however long, so "about" and "with" stay lowercase too.
Is the title case converter free?
Yes. No account and no email. It runs in your browser, so the headlines you paste are not sent or saved.
